Interesting article in the Sunday Times today. Apparently, there's this thing called "carb intolerance", whereby the person cannot metabolize the sugar found in carbs and thus suffer from high blood pressure, high blood sugar level (and thus diabetes) and easily become overweight. The article didn't elaborate on whether it was a medical condition or you know, just the way some people are. I thought it might explain why a low carb diet works for some in cutting fat and preventing unnecessary weight gain. Any comments?

a low carb diet works because it restricts calories. trying cutting out a major food group and see if you're forced to eat less. in addition, the fast spike in weight loss is due to the natural diuretic effect when you cut carbs compared to eating less. carbs also reduces activity levels since it increases seratonin production which makes ya wanna sleep. finally, the compansation of higher protein for carbs in low carb diets satatiates a person more. it's not magic, basic energy balance. eat too much, gain weight, eat lesser, lose weight, you can lose weight on a 1000 calorie all carb diet

Ha ha, I can lose weight by only just eating a small tub of ice cream everyday too, eating ice cream can reduce weight! ;D

Specifically, is INSULIN RESISTANCE. ;D So is that a medical condition or another convenient carb-bashing thing? ;D No Carb bashing from me. You know how much respect I have for Carb. From an evolutionary point of view, human develop insulin resistance to save limited carbo for the brain during starvation. But in times when food is abundant and combine with inactivity, insulin resistance actually work against us. It's a double edges sword. ;D

No lar, not saying you, I'm the one who likes to bash carbs! ;D
So in short, if I don't know when my next meal is coming, carbs would be the way, but in a place like Singapore where there's lots of food, carbs are all too easily overloaded, that about it?

Both of the above points I agree. ;D
Low calories verus low carb. I believe more in the low calories. High protein near zero diet was hot during the 70's, it does exert a diuretic effect but nowadays most bodybuilders competiting at the highest level use a low calories, moderate carb, high protein diet rather than an all protein-near zero protein diet to cut up. Why? Because it made more sense and is less drastic on the brain. ;D

Low carbohydrate diets drains our brain functions due to the lack of flow of glucose . It's never a good diet to for a super low carbo diet .
