Happened during the fourth repetition of my first heavy set (doing PTP). After lifting it more than halfway, a sharp pain flared up at the spot where the spine and hip cross. I wasn't even straining hard! Quickly locked out, put it back down. Skipped the last repetition and attempted to do the second lighter set after resting, but it didn't feel too good so decided to call it a day. It's still rather achy now, not the muscles, feels more like the bone.
Anyway, anyone knows what's wrong and what I should do? First time it has happened, and it sucks!

I don't know what to say. Seem like a bad injury. Rest a few days and see what happens first. Do the RICE technique ie rest, ice, compression, elevation for now. If u can go for a checkup it would be better.

sorry to hear that man. did u try to lift the weights entirely with the lower back or u are trying to "squat up" the weights? this could help the rest of us to avoid such injury.
i am going for goal of 800lb rack pull (8.5 plates a side).. now doing 6plates a side and really burnt me out. lower back is also aching, so is the left rotator cuff. hopefully by the time i can achieve the 800lb rackpull, i could do the 500lb deadlift.

Did you take all the proper precautions like holding in breath to maintain interthoraic pressure?

Herman: Yeah I'll just take some time off and let the ache go away. The frustrating thing is, I wasn't even straining, the load was comfortable.
Oracle: Hmm, I think I was using more of my back. How do I "squat" up the weight with my hips so high anyway? You aiming for double BW DL?
Uni: Yeah, that's why it's not my lower back that hurts. This one is lower, towards the butt crack. You know, where the spine and hip joins?

try this article, after doing the steps that the author recommends, i dont feel the stress on the lower back but more on the butt and hamstring. although cant lift much like those using lower back, it is safer still www.dieselcrew.com/articles/deadlift101.pdf

Here's an update.
Been three and a half weeks since, my back still aches somewhat when arching forwards or backwards. Went for an X-Ray today, nothing wrong the bones, phew! Doctor recommended painkillers and physio, yeah right. Hope the aches go away eventually.

Hi Jonathan, i had also had a muscle strain on my left lower back some weeks ago... dunno how it happen but anyhow... it hampered with my training for a while... wat i did was use deep-heat to rub on the affected area everyday twice and massage it... its like a heat treatment... and once the lower back muscles feels warmed up by the deep-heat cream... i will do some stretching... n within a week or 2... the pain just went away and i was back to my normal training regime... U may wanna try to see if it works for u... hope this helps...

Don't like popping pills.
As for physio, been through a year of that before in CGH when I injured my right knee five years ago. Minimal effect, still limped around slightly. Very frustrated, took up running. Even ran a half-marathon, but after two years, still couldn't squat or climb stairs properly, cannot lean on one side for too long. Took up kettlebells, within two months knee became almost as good as the other. No more unnecessary aches and pains, almost everything can be done without problem. Of course, don't ask me to play soccer or basketball, bad knee no matter how good will still have less mobility.
Also seen how those therapists treat other patients. A few have been there for years. Most were discharged half-baked, like me. Main reason: Not an athlete or sportsman so doesn't matter. Just enough to live normally can already. POOI!
With what knowledge I've gained since then, and with what I've experienced, no way I'm going to waste my time with them! If hospital physio is that lousy, imagine polyclinic physio!
Oh, and I have not been having any aches for two months. Healed? Hope so.

Wait till those physios hear this from you, the customer, not from me the "act smart, you think you know it all" physio student. ;D

i usually "squat up" the weight so i wont end up so sore on my lower back. im doing more cable crunch and good mornings now in hope to build up my DL poundage.
