This is your government at work.
Bush mentions anabolic steroids in his State of the Union address in 2003, and suddenly all hell breaks loose: subpoenas are issued at the "Arnold Classic," pro hormones are banned, and a virtual witch-hunt against professional athletes begins.
People are homeless, people are hungry, our borders are not secure, education spending is being cut, the dollar is falling in value, oil is rising, jobs are being outsourced, soldiers are dying, the environment is eroding, the middle class is disappearing, healthcare costs are skyrocketing...
...and two weeks after Jose Canseco writes a book, they have congressional hearings on anabolic steroids?
Tobacco kills hundreds of thousands of people a year. Yet, they are allowed to advertise on highway billboards with cartoon characters like "joe camel." Alcohol is the leading cause of traffic fatalities, and I have yet to watch a Superbowl without a Budweiser ad at almost every commerical break. Obesity is an epidemic in the USA, with some experts claiming that obesity-related illness will account for 50% of health care costs in the next few years... yet there is a McDonalds on every corner.
Where are the hearings on tobacco, on alcohol, on fast food and hydrogenated oils? Where are the hearings on job-outsourcing, and on oil dependence?
Why demonize steroids? Why now? Doesn't it seem a little bizaare to point the finger at something that has never caused a medically-documented death? What is the hysteria about?
Its about votes. Its about keeping us distracted from REAL news. Its about keeping people afraid of something they do not understand.
Steroids never flew a plane into the Pentagon and the WTC... but they are being pursued with more effort than Osama Bin Laden is.
Professional athletes who have used anabolics are being called poor-roll models. Where is it written that a pro-athlete (someone who is just trying to make money with a physical gift, and use that to its full potential) is by default a roll model? Aren't parents supposed to be roll models? Show me a kid who does something just because he hears his favoite athlete does, and I will show you a kid who has nutsty parents.
Don't blame the steroids. If you dont want you kid to do them, then stop pushing them to be the best player on the team. Blame the psychotic little-league dads who put unrealistic expectations on their kids. Don't blame Jason Giambi. Dont' blame Mark McGuire. Blame yourself. Wake up.
