I'm in my mid-40s and hv been weight training off and on for > 2 decades. for the last 2 yrs of so I've been using HIT workouts training twice a week and I once I feel that my gains hv reached a plateau, I usually take 2 to 3 weeks off. after that when I hit the gym again, I start with 70 to 80% of my last heaviest weight in all exercises and slowly work my way up again. at my age, every little bit of strength or muscle gain is a struggle cos your body actually starts losing muscle mass.

Honestly, for me I find it hard to train continuously more than 2 weeks. I usually do mini cycle of 7 weeks then lay off for a week. I find that if I lay off of 1 week I can still use the same weight I use before the lay off. If lay off for 2 weeks I can use about 80%.
