i wanna be strong but not big. how should i train? endurance (less stacks more reps) or strength?(more stacks less reps) And i m currently following a low carb diet. will it affect my performance? [glow=red,2,300] THIS IS AN ADVERTISEMENT[/glow]I don't want to lift weights because I don't want big muscles" or "I just do aerobics and sit-ups because I don't want to look like a man." Ladies, if you have ever uttered these words, you have done a great disservice to yourself for perpetrating this myth! Here is another joke you may have cracked. Pointing to your tummy or butt and exclaimed, "I have to lose weight in this area." Thoroughly convinced that profuse sweating is the key to an optimal physique, you robotically enter the gym armed with an unwavering purpose... to SWEAT off the extra pounds! And so, you started frantically peddling on the stationary bikes, furiously stepping away on the stair masters, and feverishly trying to crunch themselves into a smaller clothing size. You won't even glance at resistance training equipment let alone venture over into the free weight area. Sounds like you? The myth are causing women to forever swear off weight training is the belief that lifting weights causes bulging muscles. No way women will build bulging muscles unless you are on special supplementation, technically precise training and even steroids which is definitely harmful. Women simply do not have enough of male hormones that allow for increased muscle mass. In fact, women have ten to thirty times less of those essential hormones than their male counterparts. The truth is that muscle mass does not suddenly appear because you dare to lift weights. Women that simply accept this myth will miss out on all of the benefits that strength training offers. Women who incorporate moderate strength training into their workouts will increase their muscle tissue. Yes, this means that when you step onto the scale, you will note an increase in your overall "weight." It is because muscle tissue weigh more than fat. Thus, as you increase your muscle tissue, your "weight" will increase but your fats will be reduced giving you a well toned sexy body which most women can only dream of. Muscle by its very nature burns calories, even when you are sleeping. In fact, research shows that for each kilo of muscle build, you will expend 70-100 more calories per day. So, if you gain 2 kilos of muscle, you will burn about 75 more calories per kilo, which equates to 150 additional calories per day, which translates into 4200 additional calories per month and ultimately results in a weight loss of 7-8 kilos a year without doing anything! Doesn't that sound great? Another reason that women should engage in strength training is its effect on the bones. Indeed, resistance training is a powerful weapon against osteoporosis, a disease caused by porous bone and low bone mass. Women has a much higher risk than men to suffer from osteoporosis. In fact, most women will suffer from this disease in as they age. Those plagued with osteoporosis have an increased susceptibility to fractures of the wrists, hips, and spine. So, women should seriously consider resistance training to pack in strength and durability of their bone density. Research establishes that over a six-month period, resistance training increases spinal bone mineral density by 13 percent. This only makes logical sense. As you increase your muscle tissue, the supporting structures, your bones, must somehow adapt to accommodate this increase in muscle. Your bones respond by increasing in density. The result? A stronger skeletal structure and a reduced risk for osteoporosis! If you're going to make the commitment to the fitness lifestyle, by dieting and working out regularly, avail yourself of the numerous benefits that strength training has to offer both physically and mentally. So, don't completely swear-off resistance training fearing that you will transform into an Incredible Hulk! You won't and you can't. Period. OK girls, the weights are over there. Let's lift them now! Have the last laugh when your girl friends tell you they don't want to lift weights and yet watching you transformed into a sexy lady that will make heads turn when you are in your bikini.
