My answer not fancy one. But their food are very expensive, so maybe French tend to eat less. Imagine if Singapore food cost 3x as much I am sure we will all eat lesser.

why do you think French has a lean body?? It is part of the french culture for physique perfection. In the era before very early 90's when top level bodybuilding have not reached the current all-out- chemical-bloated level, you can see many very good French bodybuilding stars like Serge Nubret, Jacques, Neuville Terry Pastel, Francis Benfatto. They all sported small waist with very extreme defined washboard abdominals. They tend to work their abdominals quite a bit. They have very good armor plated pectoral chest too, but tend to cut back on thigh, calves sizes. The French emphasised on symmetry, proportions over all-out mass. I read that the French prefered "hard" physiques, even their steroid choices are geared towards the "hardening" varieties than those water retention varieties even though the latter induced more mass and strength gain. It was also brought forward that food in France cost relatively and significantly more, it is naturally people there tend to eat less to save money because of that. Imagine if the food in Singapore cost 3 times more than now, would you think thrice to overeat? Of course, whether this primary health promotion "move" is workable is going to be highly controversial. Last but not least, if you happen to watch those RA French movies versus the American version, you will see the difference in their physical preferences. ;D
