For what i can remember . Muscle Pump is due to trapping of blood within the muscle and not increase of blood flow in the muscle group . This will causes lack of flow within the muscle , thus the "increase of flow of nutrient" thru blood when having a pump might not be thru . the actual expaination of muscle pump is due to the contraction of muscle , but couldn't remember much information .

The psychological aspect of the pump is very important.when you are pumped up,you feel better and stronger, and it is easier to motivate yourself to train hard.bodybuilders traditionally associate the sensation of the pump with having a good workout.

Here's my view. I think pump is great, it makes us temporary "bigger" for a while. But, I believe pump is linked to good nutrition. You need to eat at least a few good meals every few hours before training to get a good pump. Knowing how busy our modern lifestyle is, sometime being able to get to the gym as scheduled is already a big accomplishment (think of those who always give all kind of excuse for not exercising).
At times we may not able to eat optimally (but try to at least eat some quality food), and get less of a pump, I will think of my workout is not so good, but it probably does not matter as much. Not missing the workout is most important. ;D

for strongman/powerlifter pushing at <5 reps, pump is never part of the training gains. so the basic and fundamental need are poundages and form. even if we are going to do 12 reps, we will split it into 4sets of 3 reps so it is impossible to get pump at all.

I just did my legs today. My workout centres around heavy squat and Stiff-Legged deadlift. Did a bit of leg ext, leg curls and standing calve raise at the end of the workout. But the squat and Stiff legged D/L is the main reason why I got a good workout today. I feel absolutely "big" with or without the pump. ;D

One of the most common reasons for not being able to get a pump is lack of concentration.Too many people come into the gym and just go through the motions, doing their 20sets for back or 30sets for chest but not putting any real effort and concentration into it.
