I read that in late Vince Gironda gym in Hollywood the enviroment used to be like this. No music. And when Vince is around, if you are caught not putting back plates or weights, you will get a good scolding from him. I think those who make too much noise will probably get it from him too. Many stars were there dedicately training to look like their coming roles or keep their image. Most are very dicipline and well behaved in Vince's premises.
Personally, I think there is nothing wrong with enforcing certain rules in the gym to keep it more tidy and protect the equipments from being damaged. I know when a person exert strength, grunting have a physiological purpose to improve explosiveness. But a person who grunt absolutely as loud as some angry animals are rare, I have only seen one who train like this during my years in the old Braddell Height Gym. He was subsequently banned for a chain of unsociable behaviours.
Do you think a gym should be absolutely strict on enforing rules?

Yeah man....I hate bloody hoggers. Especially those arses that see you waiting for something and purposely sit there for about 5 minutes instead of letting you do a set first. Disgusting conduct.
And those other fools who drop 40kg dumbells from 3 feet after failing a 1 rep max. Like...wtf!?!?!
I think grunting is ok lah...but nothing too excessive, like screaming and swearing in anger or hype..
And as Jay Cutler says "Even the pros rerack their weights". So theres no reason why we shouldn't. Its simply good etiquette.
Oh and last but not leat, wiping off sweaty benches. Must do.

I think sometime gym instructors may tell people off for being rough to the equipments because they fear that will shorten the lifespan of their equipments (ultimately increase their cost to run the gym). I mean if the gym belongs to you and imagine the gym is built in your house, would you be so rough to the equipments and the flooring? I remember training at home when I first started using a cement weight and a piano bench. I was very careful and put weights down slowly and gently. Think I prefer the gym to enforce rules strictly like wiping off sweat, placing the plates and DB back orderly cos it will be fair to those who follow the rules. If only every gym owner is as strict and Vince Gironda.

Well.. I agree ... but there have been cases where I saw PT and their clients just leaving a mess of DB after they have finished training... hahahah... so I tried leaving some of my own once in a while so that they can get their ideas straighten out... but I got rack my weight most of the time...
Leaving a mess of 30lbers -50lbers at the 60lber to 120lbers rack isn't a very good thing to do.. and some of the PT does it... so annoying..

If some dun do it, those who use to do it will follow. This is why I think the instructors should enforce strictly. Then it become a norm for the gym. Then come another problem. Some put back the plates but just chuck all kind of sizes any how instead of classified them in proper order. Maybe they train so hard that they have little energy left. ;D

If u open a gym with such rules, ur not doing a job but just pursuing ur passion. U wanna make money, u have got to open fitness centres and not hardcore gyms which would porbably appeal to the minority of the public.

Built a gym at the basement, dark like Dorian's Temple Gym and built a cult like reputation. People will join because of the special atmosphere. ;D But I still believe gym members should have some consideration for others. They should always use equipments with care and put equipments back neatly after usage. For me to join a gym I look at:- 1) Cost 2) Gym traffic 3) must have basic equipments I need
