suddenly developed pain on my foot, initially i suspected that i may have injured my foot while doing legpress/calve raise but i didnt realize i feel any pain until 1-2 days later. Then heard from my friend that high protein intake can cause gouts. yes, i did take more than 4 scoops of protein after my workout and the pain starts. Is this really gout? it is too late for me to see a doctor now.

haha, dun worry oracle, i was a medic during NS and i have personally seen a gout patient before.his gout caused him to be unable to walk properly and have severe joint pain.high protein intake was his cause but he did not do any weight training so all the amino acids went to his joints to crystallise.dun worry, as long as u are doing some hardcore weight training, all the protein u eat should be well utilised:)

Is this really gout? it is too late for me to see a doctor now. Stop taking 4 scoops of Whey at once, that's a protein load of nearly 100g of fast absorbing protein at one shot. The protein quickly get de-aminated (removing of the nitrogen branch) and the nitrogen become uric acid in your blood. Your kidneys will have to work very hard to remove the sudden surge of uric acid level in your blood and can never remove them fast enough. Some of these uric acids get stuck in your joints. Take at most 2 scoops of Whey at a go. Never take more than 2g protein per kg body weight per day when in doubt and that include the protein in your food added with the protein powder. If you are on extremely high protein diet for a while you will need to gradually lower the intake over a couple of days. Your body will initially crash into a negative nitrogen balance, but it will soon re-adjust its "valves" and you bounce back to positive nitrogen balance with just a reasonable amount of protein daily.

Is gout an asian disposition? Seems to me that a lot of males in singapore tends to suffer from it, when they reached a certain age in life even if they are active sportsmen. Curiously, a search thru most foreign bodybuilding forums will reveal no indication of such problem even though they consume alot more protein than us.

thanks for all the advices. i think i could have worsen it by eating 20 sticks of satay (mutton) at one go on top of the 4scoops of whey. although i suspect it, i may have injured my right foot while testing out that calves raise machine at PF. Yet to confirm but cannot see doctor due to my current training class and a big tender to prepare

Their tolerance for gout may be higher but probably by not much compare to Asian.
